We need regulatory reform. The incentives are all towards distributing utter BS for attention and money. The penalties come very slowly (too slowly) and are not big enough.
There needs to be reform to libel laws. I know that is what Trump is pushing for but it is reverse psychology. He knows people will push back on it for fear that he will harass them -- but it is he who, as we have seen, has much more to lose and he will if changes are made.
So libel laws with a lower standard, even for politicians, and with bigger penalties when there is no attempt to get the facts straight.
And there needs to be a way to criminalize this. The damage some of these people have done to society is massive. Fox spreading the big lie, knowingly, had done irreparable harm to society. If they had told the truth, we might be in a very different situation.
The penalties can be constructed based on reach.
Also social media platforms need to be striped of cookies and data collection for targeting. This way people can not be hyper targetted with very specific messages designed for max impact and we will all be exposed to different narratives.
Sure it will blow up some of their business model but they have had time to rectify this and have not so far.
Too late now.
Algorithms need to be transparent and people need to have opt in options.
This is just for starters.
