If a person is dangerous, I will not consider compassion or empathy until the danger is resolved.

I have been around too many people, showed them compassion and empathy only to see in hindsight, I was enabling and allowed them to damage more.

When he is not longer a threat, we can consider how we handle and process the aftermath. Until then, the priority is getting the gun out of the hands of the maniac and that is all that matters. We can then assess the rest.
