California has not always been liberal, but we are now to the extreme, having felt the consequences of Reagan, who undid the massive, effective healthcare system. Pete Wilson later ushered in the bunch of immigration stuff that stunk, was against same-sex couples getting married, and deregulation of utility companies. This is just to name a few things.

So, yes, our current status is a direct result of trying the Republican experiment and rejecting it.

This is not to say that the left has been perfect but some of the things the right did were more along the lines of catastrophic.
